iCAN Collaboration with Cambodia Knits

iCAN is very excited about our recent collaboration with Cambodia Knits. From next week you will be able to purchase or pre-order your child's animal team mascot, which has been lovingly hand-made in Phnom Penh. This is a company that really aligns with our values as a school: making connections with and supporting the wider community, buying local sustainable products, and reducing plastic waste. The team animals will be: the sarus crane, siamese crocodile, freshwater stingray and the sun bear. Each learner at iCAN has already been allocated a team animal. A table will be set up in the iCAN garden next Friday so that families can see the animal mascots and submit their orders.

Cambodia Knits (CK) produces beautiful, high quality and unique hand-made products while providing fair and flexible employment opportunities. It is a social enterprise working with marginalized communities in and near Phnom Penh. They believe that women have the power to break the intergenerational cycles of poverty, to contribute to their communities while supporting their families. Many women in Cambodia have limited education and skills due to being pulled out of school at an early age, with girls’ education being considered unimportant in the past.

Every CK product comes with the name of the person who made it on the cloth label attached to it. This is because they are proud of the people who make their products and want them to be proud of their handiwork too, knowing their items are shipped all around the world.

Cambodia Knits provides all the training and materials needed to make their critters, so it is easier for new producers to start working and earning. CK also provides all social benefits to its home-based workers, such as social security, pension as well as educational stipends for their children. CK is a World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) provisional member, which means they are going through the audit process to make sure everything that they do is fair to their people, the planet and in a transparent and accountable manner.

All the CK yarns have been safety tested to EU, USA and Australian standards meaning they are toxin free and fully safe for children! We also follow strict protocols to ensure the safety of each and every homemade, handmade product.

Cambodia Knits aims to be as eco-friendly as possible. The process of producing their cuddly creatures is low impact as it requires no energy inputs beyond the hands and hearts of their producers and there is little waste generated in our production process. At their office they aim to be as plastic free as we can be, with their staff using reusable cups for take-away drinks and boxes for take away food.

Cambodia Knits are so excited to have had the chance to work with iCAN on the house animals and to make them in the school colours. We hope all the children at iCAN love their house toys… don’t forget to write your name on your toy so you don’t mix it up with someone else’s!
