On the last day of learning block 2 the whole school finished the week with the Maths Day Sale. Each of the classes had previously decided on a product that they would make and sell that would generate a profit. This entrepreneurial idea allowed the learners to think about mathematical concepts such as cost, profit and loss, as well as calculating amounts in money using skills such as addition and subtraction. For the younger learners they were able to apply their knowledge of shape, number, or repeating patterns to create products that matched their age appropriate learning goals. Products ranged from foods, such as locally source fruit kebabs, to cushions, and paper badges. The learners had to think about the environmental impact of their products and to try and ensure that they were not generating unnecessary waste in the process of making and selling their product. Year 4 used upcycled fabrics, Year 2 served their locally sourced fruit kebabs on wooden skewers, and Year 6 used their class scrap paper to make their iCAN mascot badges. The costs of materials and ingredients was deducted accordingly and the overall profit will be donated to SWIM Cambodia. www.safetywhenitmatters.org
